Hot Zone: Question 1

Tell me what you thought about the book, The Hot Zone. What did you like the best about it? What did you like the least? Why do you think I had you read it BEFORE you took AP Biology?

  1. I thought the book was much better than i thought it was going to be. I liked that it wasn't just a book of facts, it was a story. I think you asked us to read this book because you wanted us to see that science books are sometimes fun to read.

  2. 1. I thought the book, The Hot Zone, was a very interesting and exciting book. What I liked best about the book was that is was very suspenseful at points. I thought the operation that the team lead into the monkey house in Reston, Virginia was very exciting and suspenseful. I also liked that the book contained real life characters and told about the lives of the people working with the Ebola virus. This allowed the reader to understand their perspective and realize that those people put their lives in danger to save the lives of others. What I liked the least about the book was that it dragged on at certain points. I felt that Richard Preston, the author, went a lot into depth about Ebola river at points and it got a bit boring. I was also disappointed that the team that led the expedition to Kitum Cave wasn't able to find the original host of the Ebola virus. I think you had us read The Hot Zone before we took AP Biology because the book contains a lot of information regarding biology. It introduced us to topics, such as viruses, that we are going to learn in depth about during the school year in AP Biology.

  3. 1. I thought Hot Zone was really interesting and suspenseful. It was easy for me to keep on going and reading. I learned a lot about viruses and also enjoyed the story. There wasn't much I didn't like about the book. If I had to pick one thing I would say I didn't like how all those monkeys ended up dying. I think you made us read this book before the school year so we already have a head start on learning about certain things like viruses and got us interested.

  4. 1. I thought this was an interesting book. The best part about the book was the suspense that made me read further. I personally liked the whole book however i felt that at some points the author Richard Preston dragged on. i think you had us read the book before Ap biology is beacuse this book contains a lot of information on viruses and other biology related information. The book goes into depth.

  5. I thought that the book was very interesting and informative, but not in a way science text book kinda way. That's also one of the reasons why I like the book because it was able to hold my attention, I didn't find myself distracted as easily as I thought I would be. Though honestly there were some parts that did drag on, that I felt didn't really need to be so long, other then that I enjoyed the book. I think you had us read the book before AP Biology had actually started so we can see and understand that biology isn't just what we learn in school, that it is all around as and that it can effect us in different ways. Also though because we probably wont have much time to do stuff like this on the side because of the AP exams.

  6. I thought that the book was interesting because the reader can really explore the personal experiences and insights of the people that dealt with the virus. It effectively provides an idea of the history on the virus and what it was like to suffer with it. At some point in the story, it gave too much of an idea and was a bit long. Other than that, I thought the story was great. I think that you gave us this book to read before the school year started because it would give us plenty of information on what we’re about to study in class.

  7. My opinion on The Hot Zone by Richard Preston was that it was a great page turner. At points it was very descriptive and suspenseful and I didn't want to put the book down. I liked that the novel was non-fiction and on a topic I didn't previously know about. I felt like reading this book was a win-win situation and a great book for our summer assignment because it was interesting and we got to learn more about viruses and the different strains of Ebola. I think you made your AP Biology students read this as part of the summer assignment because you knew we would enjoy it.

  8. This book was awesome. I didn't expect it to be as interesting as it turned out to be. Anyway, I had a good time reading this book. I was expecting something in between the school textbook and charles darwin's journal. It ended up being an exciting story that made me want to know what was going to happen. I didn't like the middle pages when Preston kept talking about the background of Marburg and Ebola and wasn't getting to the point with how Ebola was going to break out in Washington D.C. I think you wanted us to read something like the Hot Zone because its a fun book based on biology and throughout the year if we get caught up in the boring stuff, we can remember that biology can also be fun.

  9. At first i thought this book was going to be anouther one of these boring summer assignments. And when i firt began to read i still felt the same way, yet as the book progressed i began to be more interested in it. One thing i liked about this book was the detail it went into on what was happening to the victims of Marburg and Ebola, it gave me somewhat of a feeling for what it looked like or felt like. I didnt really care for the testing done on the monkeys. I believe that the reason we were assigned to read this book was so we would get a sense of what our first topic may be about and a sense of what biology is about.

  10. I simply love the book. I just loved how much detail it gave, I felt that I was in the lab with the scientist and at the bedside of those dying from it. Every time I picked it up I could not put it down, it was like a mystery book to me, the only books that really catch my attention. The only thing I did not like was the amount of information on each new person introduced. I just wanted to get on with the real story line. I think you made us read the book so that we open our eyes to what is really out there. You hoped that it would get our attention so that we would be ready to learn a whole lot about it this year

  11. 1. I thought the book was really good. At first i was a little nervous that i wouldn't like it. As i started to read it got better and better. I think one of my favorite things baout this book was how detailed it was. It really showed you exactly what was going on. The details helped you paint a picture in your mind.

  12. I actually liked the book it was a bit boring in the beginning but as I continued to read it it got better and better. I liked the detail the book went into about the infected people and what they went through. However I disliked the details it went into about the everyday lives of some characters.

  13. 1. I though the book turned out being pretty good. This was surprising because im not much of a reader but this book was really interesting. The amount of detail put into this book was my favorite part and least favorite part at the same time, the details always let me know exactly what was going on so i wasnt confused but at the same time towards the beginning of the book it did seem to drag on a bit. I think you made us read this book before AP Bio to get us pumped up about taking the class and showing one of the more interesting sides of biology.

  14. I thought that The Hot Zone was amazing! I read it probably the first week of the summer because I could not put it down. My favorite part was learning all of the procedures that are involved in containing viruses, such as Ebola and Marburg. It was very suspenseful for a biology book. I thought it was going to be all facts and be a very hard read but the suspense when one of the biohazardous suits had a tear and then you didn't know whether or not the blood actually got on them until they took off their gloves and put it in water to see if there was a leak. It made my heart freeze when I read that. The thing I liked the least was that sometimes the writer of the book was very scattered and went back and forth between characters and the time line was scattered. I think you made us read this before AP Biology because it made us interested in learning about the strains of viruses and how each one can affect the body.
