Dinah - posts #2 10-22

10. flower ovary- it is the female reproductive organ of a flower. It is above the base of the petals. The ovary protects the seeds and produces a flowering plant or fruit.

11. frond- this is a picture of a frond which shows many division to the plant's leaves. This plant is a fern which has blades and is divided into many sections within the leaves.

12. phloem- it is the tissue living in plants that mainly deals with the transportation of water and nutrients throughout the whole plant during the process of photosynthesis.

13. altruistic behavior- when an organism is concerned or protects another organism from common predators, or other harmful organisms. This dog is chained to a pole in a little hut next to my grandpa's house and stays there to sense any visitors or enemies come by. The dog barks loudly to signal my grandpa if strangers approach the house.

14. cuticle layer of a plant- it is the waxy layer on the surface of the tissue of a plant and serves as a barrier for water movement out of a leaf. It also serves to protect the underlying tissues of the plant, similar to the function of protecting the epidermis.

15. detritivore- organisms that gain nutrients by associating with decomposition. Worms are heterotrophs that feed on and live in decomposers, which is the soil. They serve as an important part of the ecosystem, as a recycler.

16. frond- a frond is a large leaf that has many spaces or divisions to it. A palm tree is an excellent example because it contains palm leaves which have many divisions.

17. ectotherm- an ectotherm is a cold-blooded organism that live to control their body temperatures externally and have low metabolism such as reptiles. This lizard is an example of an ectotherm.

18. succession- this picture was taken in india and shows how cows experience succession. Succession is the gradual change over time of how a species or organism grows during their lifetime, in an ecological system. The calf grows over time and eventually becomes an adult, the cow.

19. plant adaptation- some plants including lily pads lack a strong water transportation system in their stems so, water, nutrients and gases are absorbed directly from the water. Plants such as these lily pads can produce seeds that float.

20. exoskeleton- this lobster has an exoskeleton which is a hard covering that shields and supports its body. It also helps in the process of feeding and excretion. The exoskeleton also protects the lobster from predators because of its strength and hardness.

21. animal adaptation- the ducks in this picture use their webbed feet to swim for eating at the bottom of ponds and lakes. They also use their webbed feet to paddle through the water and to walk on the land and mud as well.

22. eukaryote- a eukaryote is either a unicellular or mutilcellular organism that has a complex structure in addition to having a membrane and nucleus, such as animals and plants. This bird is an animal with a multicellular structure and contains a membrane and a nucleus.

  1. Dinah, great photos. I love that you have photos from India!

    You have some duplicates here.

You need to read up on succession. The cow growing shows development and maturation, but it is NOT an example of succession. Check out the ecology chapters in the text.
